Are you fed up with trying to balance a cocktail menu that’s as individualized as it is fun? Do you find yourself wanting to create your own unique concoctions, but struggling to know exactly how and when to add them in the right context?

Have no fear – as an experienced team of experts in the industry and bartender of over a decade myself, we are here!

From planning out your entire operation down to presentation details like garnish decoration, this guide will have even the newest bartenders feeling like seasoned professionals by the time they’re done. Let’s get mixing!
Ah yes, the mysteries of the cocktail menu creation world. Such an art form! Sure… it takes skill and finesse to craft drinks just right – for those exacting preferences like “extra limey” or “add more Gin”.
But beyond the structural components of creating a well-crafted menu, there is also an element of charm – which, let’s face it, could make your establishment stand out from its competitors even more than those succulent margaritas would already do!
So here we have it, the checklist you want to have in your pocket when you’re creating a cocktail menu that is well-balanced and loved by all your guests.

But first, the team at Local Bartending School wanted me, an experienced bartender, to first share a story about my buddy named Will.

learning-cocktail-creating
Will the Bartender had been working at The Salty Sailor for months, but he still hadn’t been able to come up with a good cocktail menu. He was trying hard to impress his boss and make some money in tips, but it seemed like no matter what he did, nothing worked.
One day, after yet another failed attempt at creating a new drink that would draw customers in, Will decided to take matters into his own hands and learn the basics of bartending. He spent hours on end studying recipes and techniques online until finally, he felt ready to start experimenting again.
With newfound confidence in hand, Will went back behind the bar determined to create something special this time around. After testing out several different combinations of ingredients and flavors, he ended up concocting an amazing creation—the perfectly balanced cocktail menu! It quickly became one of the most popular drink menus created by a bartender, as customers kept coming back for more.
Will’s boss was so impressed with his work that they created a small section of their menu specifically dedicated to Will’s creations!
His signature cocktails were soon generating more revenue than any other item on the menu, plus generous tips from happy customers. In just a few months’ time Will had gone from a struggling bartender unable to come up with anything worthwhile, to becoming the star mixologist everyone wanted to try out!

Recreating History in Every Cocktail

four-basics-cocktails
Did you know that in early 19th-century definitions, cocktails were said to have only four elements?
That’s right, all you need to create a delicious cocktail is spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. So go ahead, experiment with different spirits and mixers, add a splash of sweetness, and don’t forget the bitters to balance it all out.

Your customers will be raising their perfectly picked glassware and opening their wallets to your newfound bartending skills in no time.

What does it mean to balance a cocktail?

Being a new bartender is one of the most exciting times, but also one of the most intimidating. As you dive into the world of mixology, you’ll quickly learn that balancing a drink menu is key to being a high-performing bartender and revenue-generating bar owner.
So what does it mean to create a “balanced” cocktail menu?
Well, it’s all about creating perfect harmony between the various ingredients. You want every element to shine through without one overpowering the others. Think of it like a dance party—you want everyone to have their moment in the spotlight without any one person hogging the dance floor. So, let your taste buds (And even your bar buds! They make a great team of tasters.) be your guide and aim for that perfect balance with every drink and cocktail menu you make.
1. Don’t forget the basics. Start with the classics, like whiskey sours and martinis then work your way up from there.
2. Mix it up a bit. Sure, you want fruity drinks, like margaritas or mojitos. But for variety and balance, your cocktail menu needs to have all flavor profiles, like salty, sweet, sour, savory, etc.
3. Consider cultural cocktails. Think about how adding certain liqueurs or spices could give your guests an enriched experience.

4. Make sure you know what you’re doing. Take a bartending class to learn all the tips and tricks of the trade before you start with a huge feat like creating a cocktail menu. Many people try—few succeed.

tools-for-making-balanced-cocktails

5. Start by gathering basic bar supplies and bar tools such as shakers, strainers, and jiggers , dehydrators for garnishes, torches, stoves, etc. This is all crucial to being able to fully experiment with and create unique flavor combinations that your guests crave.

6. Choose a selection of spirits that cater to your customers’ tastes. Think about spirits that are popular around you; like, vodka , whiskey , tequila , gin ,etc. Have a local special like bourbon? Tailor to that, 100%.

7. Learn all of the mixology basics. You also want to totally nail down how to make an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan so you can include a few familiars, but with a special twist.

8. Don’t forget about non-alcoholic drinks for everyone who isn’t drinking alcohol. You might also want to consider those non-alcoholic, low ABV, and mocktails for those looking to have a more mellow evening.

9. Balance out the menu with affordable cocktails and expensive cocktails so that there’s something for everyone.

10. Never forget to add a few signature cocktails that make your bar stand out from the rest!

11. Understand your customer base. Determine who your typical customers are and what they like to drink. Think about an Italian restaurant compared to a Mexican. Typically the drinks are different, just as much as the food, because of their clientele and what they come in looking for.

12. Stock up on the basics. Plan ahead by stocking up on all the necessary ingredients for your most popular drinks

13. Explore different flavor combinations. Experiment with new flavors and ingredients to come up with interesting combinations

14. Find exciting ways to present drinks. Make sure to provide a visual presentation that will attract customers. Don’t be scared to experiment with presentation. Burn your cinnamon and expel oils from citrus to invite the nose to the sensory party. Garnish your drinks with edible flowers or ice cubes with herbs in them to make them more appealing for all of the senses.

15. Don’t forget about up gaming garnishes! This is one of the easiest things to do, but most common mistake I see. Give guests something extra special by adding a garnish they don’t typically see. Like a dehydrated lime, candy for a rim, or Twizzlers as a straw. Go crazy! [GIF] This is really where you can let your creative side of out its cage.

Famous Cocktail Menus

1. Atlas in Singapore. It’s safe to say that Jesse Vida, the head bartender at Atlas, has found balanced bliss. With his guidance, the venue’s newest drink menu is a tribute to the glory days of Art Deco. Divided into five chapters, each named after an event or milestone from the era, the menu takes you on a journey through the glamour, culture, and fashion of the time. It’s no easy feat to balance the old with the new, but Vida has done so with ease.

2. Raised by Wolves in San Diego. With the recent opening of Raised by Wolves, San Diego’s cocktail scene has officially leveled up. But what sets this new bar apart isn’t just its hidden location behind a secret door in a fine spirits shop. No, what really makes Raised by Wolves stand out is its dynamic duo of owners, Erick Castro and Chris Patino. Both accomplished bartenders in their own right, they’ve now combined forces to create a cocktail menu that always keeps patrons guessing. From the fruity and fun Island Old Fashioned to the spicy and refreshing Sonora Señora, there’s a drink for every taste at Raised by Wolves. Looks like San Diego just got a new contender for best bar in town!

3. Acadia in Chicago, Illinois. Sure, it may be a restaurant first and foremost, but let’s not overlook the fact that their cocktail game is on another level. Their wine lists alone could easily take up a good chunk of your evening (we’re talking as much as 41 pages, folks), but it’s their cocktail offerings that really steal the show. They’re unique AF.

Creating Cocktail Menus That Slay: 5 Fundamentals Facts that Keep You from Failing

1. The Ingredients that Make up the DNA of Any Cocktail

Once you understand the role each ingredient plays, you’ll be able to create cocktails and cocktail menus that are balanced and tantalizing.

Every cocktail is made up of several vital ingredients that can be categorized as:

• Base. The base ingredient is typically the spirit that forms the foundation of the cocktail,
• Modifier. The modifier ingredient balances out the flavors and adds texture.
• Flavoring agents. Flavoring agents are added to enhance the drink’s overall taste and aroma, that is, garnishes and bitters.
• cocktail-creation-basics

2. Learn Drink Families

To craft a great menu, it’s important to understand the different drink families and their respective cocktails. There are six categories: spirit-forward, sours, fizzes, smashes, highballs, and flips. Spirit-forward cocktails such as Manhattans and Negronis predominantly feature the base spirit. Sours, on the other hand, have a sour element added, like lemon juice. To make a fizz, add soda water to a sour. Smashes are made by muddling herbs and fruit before adding the other ingredients. Highballs are tall drinks made with a base spirit and mixer, while flips are decadent drinks made with egg yolk and fortified wine.

3.Create a Workable Mise En Place

Mise en place is a critical step in any bartender’s workflow and honestly one of the biggest mistakes of bar owners who aren’t familiar with the industry.

This refers to preparing everything beforehand, such as slicing fruits, pre-batching syrups, and juices, and prepping garnishes.

This is a key step that helps bartenders work more efficiently, reduce prep time, and serve drinks faster. Bartenders should have all the needed tools within reach to stay efficient, such as ice scoops, strainers, Hawthorne strainers, and so much more.

4.Source New Drinks and Rotating Out Old Ones

It’s essential to keep your menu fresh and exciting by regularly rotating in drinks and retiring those that aren’t selling as well. Before adding something new to the menu, consider whether you have the necessary ingredients in stock, whether you can handle the prep workload, and, more importantly, whether it is profitable. To maximize the return on investment, analyze the revenue generated from each cocktail and eliminate those that aren’t selling well.

5.Break Down Costs and Maximizing Profitability or Else… Your Bar Might Fail

Cocktail prices range widely, and it’s essential to have a basic understanding of the cost of goods sold (COGS) and how it affects profit margins. COGS includes the cost of all ingredients used to make a cocktail, including the base spirit, modifier, and flavorings. Ensure that the price of your cocktail covers the COGS for an acceptable profit margin and any overheads.

If I haven’t said it enough, COGS matter. I can’t tell you how many times COGS come up in bar and restaurant management/ownership. So if you aren’t talking COGS, you’re doing something wrong.

Ah tequila, the spirit of choice for many a night out. From margaritas to shots, tequila has become a staple in bars across the world.

But what is tequila? What are the different types? How do you make the perfect tequila cocktail? And what are the most popular tequila cocktails?

We’re here to help answer all your questions and teach you everything you need about this classic spirit.

Buckle up bartenders and bar owners, it’s time to get schooled on tequila. It’s making its way throughout the craft cocktail and bar scene, so you don’t want to be out of the loop on this one.

What is Tequila?

Tequila has been around for centuries and can now be found in almost any bar around the world.

This agave spirit is made from an iconic blue agave plant that is native to Mexico, making it a great addition to new, or any, bartender’s repertoires.

Ranging usually between 52% and 55% alcohol by volume, tequila certainly packs a punch! That’s why you hear so much about it and why it has its own t-shirt slogan.

However, those new to tequila cocktails should not be afraid. These drinks can range from sweet and citrusy to peppery in flavor when made right. With some practice, new bartenders are sure to become tequila masters in no time.

Feeling like traveling around the world, but using your mouth?

What Are The Types Of Tequila?

There are four main types of tequila including blanco (unaged), reposado (aged between two and twelve months), añejo (aged between one and three years), and extra añejo (aged three years or more).

Blanco has a strong agave flavor while reposado often has notes of vanilla, spice, or oak due to its aging process.

Añejo has mellow flavors of caramel, nuts, burnt sugar, and chocolate while extra añejo has strong flavors like coffee or tobacco due to its lengthy aging process.

How is Tequila Different from Mezcal?

A common confusion new bartenders will face is how tequila differs from mezcal.

On the surface, they seem interchangeable – both are made with blue agave and have a smoky flavor. However, there are some key distinctions, including which type of agave is used for each brand and, most importantly, that tequila is exclusively produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco while mezcal’s territory covers nine states. In terms of taste, tequila has more grassy, herbal flavors with a cleaner finish than what you’d find in your traditional mezcal cocktails; so newbies just getting into their mixing game should consider the subtle differences before pouring out the margaritas.

Here’s a quick video run-down of the difference.

Have you ever been confused? You’re not alone! Here’s a story from a friend of mine in the bar industry. You might resonate!

I was nervous, really nervous. I had just started working at one of the most popular bars in Chicago as a new bartender and I had no idea what I was doing.

On my first night, I accidentally served someone mezcal instead of tequila – oops! The customer gave me an odd look and asked if I knew the difference between the two drinks; to which my face flushed with embarrassment as I shook my head no.

One of my coworkers noticed this exchange and came over to help explain the differences between mezcal and tequila to me and the customer. They were patient with me but still, it didn’t take away from how embarrassed I felt – especially when other customers started chiming in about their own experiences with these drinks!

My bosses were kind enough not to fire me on account of this mishap (thankfully!) but they did strongly suggest that if I wanted to stay employed at their bar for any length of time, then it would be wise for me to attend a bartending school so that situations like this wouldn’t happen again in the future. So that’s exactly what I did!

It took some hours after work each day but eventually, through lots of practice and dedication, by attending classes at bartending school, plus lots of taste testing. Which is also known as “market research” in my lay of the land.

Soon enough, not only could I tell tequila from Mezcal blindfolded, but actually enjoyed teaching others too about all things alcohol-related (in fact now many people come back specifically because they know that I have expertise on hand!).

It was definitely worth feeling slightly embarrassed for a few minutes. Who knows where else learning more about cocktails could take me?

How To Make Tequila Cocktails

For new bartenders or mixologists looking to get creative with tequila, it’s all about having the right tools in your arsenal: a good quality shaker, some strainers, and of course, some top-notch ingredients!

Learning new techniques for crafting unique tequila cocktails can up your game and your cash-inflow.

Whether you prefer classic margaritas or something more creative (more on that below!), the key is to be creative and have fun with the flavors. Once you have those basics mastered, show off your new talents and make some memorable drinks for your memorable (or not-so-memorable) guests.

Our biggest tip is to start off easy. Make and sample some simple recipes like margaritas or palomas. Then, you can move on to more “complex” drinks like Bloody Marias or Tequilas Sunrise for your regulars that want something new!

The Most Popular Tequila Cocktails

margarita-most-popular-tequila

Margaritas

Margaritas are undoubtedly one of the most popular cocktails made with tequila but there are plenty more worth trying out!

Actually, did you know that there are over 20 different types of margarita-themed cocktails like the classic margarita, electric margarita, shaken margarita, and frozen classic margaritas? How can you keep up with it all?

But, if you’re a new bartender or just opened a new bar, knowing how to make a killer margarita is essential! The staple ingredient in this beloved cocktail is, of course, tequila. The next secret ingredient is Local Bartending School, but we’ll get to that here in just a bit.

Margaritas have been around for over a century and are most likely the world’s most popular tequila-based drink.

Not only are they flavorful and fun to make, but they can also be quite profitable for bartenders & bar owners! With over 20 different variations, you could probably run a special every day for an entire month.

So make sure you know the basics of making an unforgettable marg: start by adding equal parts tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, and your favorite triple sec in an ice-filled shaker. Shake it up, strain over ice into a glass, and garnish with a lime wheel – boom (or should we say ¡Olé!)!

Here’s a breakdown of a classic margarita recipe.

Once you have your ingredients ready:

• Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and
• Add 2 oz. of tequila, 1 oz. of freshly squeezed lime juice, and 1 oz. of triple sec.
• Shake well until the mixture is well chilled and strain into a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice.
• Garnish with a slice of lime.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also experiment with different variations of the margarita recipe. For example, a spicy margarita can be made by muddling a few slices of jalapeño pepper in the shaker before adding the other ingredients. You can also try adding fresh fruit purees, such as strawberry or mango, for a sweeter twist on the classic recipe.

No matter how you choose to make it, the margarita is a timeless and versatile cocktail that’s perfect for any occasion. So the next time you’re looking to cool off and unwind, give this delicious and refreshing drink a try!

Now you’re ready to start selling delicious margaritas like nobody’s biz. Except for your biz, because we’re here to make money and margaritas!

paloma-tequila-recipe

Palomas

Palomas are light and refreshing with grapefruit juice. They take the second spot for brunch cocktails, ranking behind the ever-popular mimosa. Palomas are perfect for those spring or summer days on the patio or events that are held during the season!

Other Classic Tequila Cocktails

Long Island Iced Tea

The combination of gin, vodka, rum, tequila, and triple sec is what gives this drink its punch. The addition of fresh lemon juice and simple syrup balances out the drink’s sweetness with a sharp tang. The cola adds a little bit of fizz and enhances the drink’s complex flavors.

Ingredients:

• 1 oz gin
• 1 oz vodka
• 1 oz rum
• 1 oz tequila
• 1 oz triple sec

• Lemon wedges, garnish

• Add the gin, vodka, rum, tequila, triple sec, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker and shake well for about 10-15 seconds, until the shaker becomes chilled.
• Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with ice.
• Top with the cola and stir gently to combine.
• Garnish with a lemon wedge and serve immediately.

Ingredients:

• 2 oz. tequila (either blanco or reposado)
• 3/4 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice

• Strain the mixture into a chilled glass (preferably a rocks glass or coupe) and let it settle for a few seconds.
• Garnish with a slice of lemon or lime, and serve immediately.

Tips:

• Freshly squeezed lemon juice is a must for this recipe. Avoid using bottled juice as it can be too sweet or tart. use.
• To ensure the egg white is properly mixed, use a “dry” shake (without ice) first, then add ice and shake again to chill.

Mexican Mule

The Mexican Mule is a delicious twist on the classic Moscow Mule. It’s a perfect cocktail for summer or any time you want a refreshing drink with a little bit of a kick.

A good-quality ginger beer can truly make or break this drink! So bar owners don’t think you can cut some cost-corners by ordering the cheap stuff.

Make sure you serve in a copper mug if possible. The copper allows the drink to stay cold for longer and adds a unique rustic touch. Plus, guests will get sad if their mules don’t come in the copper mugs.

Ingredients:

• 2 oz tequila
• 1 oz lime juice
• 4 oz ginger beer
• 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
• Lime wedge for garnish
• Ice

• In a copper mug or a glass of your choice, add ice up to about ¾ of the way.
• Pour in 2 oz of tequila over the ice.
• Squeeze in 1 oz of freshly squeezed lime juice, making sure to remove any seeds.
• Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the drink to give it a subtle but distinct flavor.
• Finally, top the drink with 4 oz of ginger beer, which gives it a refreshing, spicy kick.
• Garnish with a lime wedge for an extra burst of citrus flavor and a pop of color.

Bloody Maria

A Bloody Maria is a classic cocktail that is essentially a spicier version of a Bloody Mary, with tequila as the main spirit. This zesty and fiery drink is perfect for anyone looking for a little bit of a kick to their classic brunch favorite.

Ingredients:

• 2 ounces of tequila
• 3 ounces of tomato juice
• 1 ounce of fresh lime juice
• 2-3 dashes of hot sauce (depending on the spice preference)
• 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
• Pinch of salt and black pepper
• Celery stalk, lime wedge, and pickled jalapeño for garnish

Instructions:

• To get started, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add in the tequila, tomato juice, and lime juice. Shake well to combine the ingredients and then add in the hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Shake the mixture again and strain it into a tall glass filled with ice.
• To garnish your Bloody Maria, skewer a pickled jalapeño and a lime wedge and place it in the glass along with a celery stalk. Not only do these garnishes add some visual appeal, but they also enhance the flavor of the cocktail.
• If you want to take your Bloody Maria to the next level, you can also rim the edge of the glass with salt or Tajin seasoning. This will add an additional burst of flavor and complement the spicy notes in the cocktail.

A classic tequila-based cocktail made with triple sec and lime juice, this is a favorite when it comes to ordering a drink in America.

This cocktail has been around for decades on decades on decades, but its origin story is still shrouded in mystery (much like where the manager goes during the rush). Whether you choose to add salt, sugar or nothing at all, the refreshing combination of tart lime and sweet triple sec make this beverage one of the favorites here for us in the United States.

Mexico - Margarita or Paloma: The World May Never Know, So Your Guest Will Decide

mexico-most-popular-cocktail

We covered Margaritas earlier when we explored the great U.S. of A.

Next up on our journey, we’re looking at a Mexican favorite that is perfect for enjoying on sunny days at your local taqueria or cantina. Palomas are made with tequila and grapefruit juice, and topped off with soda water for a light and bubbly kick. If your guest is looking for a spicy variation to really zest things up, try adding a pinch of chili powder or fresh jalapeno slices for an extra spicy punch!

UK - Gin and Tonic

united-kingdom-most-popular-cocktail

There’s nothing like a Gin and Tonic in the summertime, and as stats show, it’s the country’s most-sold cocktail.

But if you want to make an extra special G&T that’ll keep the punters coming back for more, follow these tips. Use premium gin, fresh lime juice, and a good quality tonic water to really do the classic cocktail justice.

Add cucumber slices or juniper berries for added flavor, bonus points, and a happy guest!

Molecular mixology is also gaining momentum, which has bartenders making country cocktails with every imaginable twist. So if you’re looking to wow your customers with something new, get creative with some inspiration form our friends across the pond.

Spain - Sangria

spain-sangria-most-popular-cocktail

Sangria is here to stay because of how good it tastes and how easy it is to make.

Bartenders should know that Spain’s favorite cocktail isn’t just delicious, but also super simple!

Start with a good red wine base and add whatever juicy fruit you have on hand. Throw in any sweet liqueur for extra flavor, and top off with some sparkling soda, and mirar! You’ve created a Spain-approved crowd-pleaser.

As for bar owners, don’t forget those group cocktails are in high demand – sangria included! All around the world cocktails come in large batches meant to share, so bringing in colorful and creative pitchers of sangria can definitely score you some more patrons looking for some quality cocktails from a variety of cultures.

Italy - Bellini

italy-bellini-popular-cocktail

The next time you’re looking for something to add some pizzazz to your cocktails menu, explore recipes from cocktails from all around the world – like the bellini!

Bellinis are cocktails from Italy that have become increasingly popular in the U.S. in recent years, too. If your guest is sick of mimosas at brunch, they may like bellini to switch things up.

Some fun facts about these cocktails; they get their signature pink hue from red peach juice and can be made with a variety of fruits such as mangoes and strawberries too!

Our Italian bartender friends have created a combination of Prosecco, peach puree, and sometimes other fruit juices to create this bubbly concoction.

Although there is debate about the exact origin, it’s believed to have been invented in the 1930s at Harry’s Bar in Venice.

To make a great batch of bellini’s yourself, begin by adding 1 part peach puree and 2 parts prosecco in a glass. If you’re feeling extra fancy, try making yours with frozen fruits or even a few drops of liqueur!

Another variation of the Italian favorite you might want to try is to serve it frozen (aka blended).

France - Mauresco

france-most-popular-drink-mauresco

Aurélie Panhelleux, a bar owner, isn’t exaggerating. Pastis proudly stands as a beacon of French culture, dating all the way back to the early 1800s when a soldier had the revolutionary idea of mixing absinthe and water.

Since then, it’s become an iconic French experience.

Mauresco is a French cocktail that has been around for centuries.

Though the original version was made with absinthe, modern iterations usually contain gin, pastis (an anise-flavored liqueur), lemon juice, orgeat syrup, and fresh dill. We love adding our own twist to cocktails from all around the world and our favorite way to enjoy Mauresco is with a hint of lime or mint.

To make the perfect Mauresque according to cocktails experts in France, start with 1 ½ oz. gin, ¼ oz. pastis, ¾ oz. lemon juice, mix in ½ oz. orgeat with freshly chopped dill (filtered!), then add ⅓ oz egg white into a shaker full of ice. Shake it up to perfection and serve it in a coupe glass.

Germany - Michelada

germany-popular-cocktails

Germany’s famous cocktail, the Michelada, is a mixologist’s delight or downfall.

While its mystery ingredients may vary from recipe to recipe, the traditional version consists of bright lager beer mixed with tomato juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and lime juice. The result? A zesty concoction that packs a ton of flavor in one glass.

Long prized for their bold taste and refreshing quality, Micheladas are definitely not for the lighthearted – when it comes to flair and attitude, this drink takes the podium. So brave Germans (or non-Germans!) guests eager to take their palate on an adventure should start sipping on this popular treat.

Canada - Caesar

The Caesar cocktail isn’t just popular in Canada – it’s a cultural icon. Canadians have their own distinctive version of the bloody mary cocktail. Inventive, delicious, and quintessentially Canadian.

It’s often said that if you’re going to make a Caesar, you have to do it like a true Canuck.

So here are the top tips for making the perfect Caesar:

start with warm tomato juice and add Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and salt for some kicks; finish off with vodka, celery salt and a lime wedge for tangy goodness.

Bartenders, tell your customers and regulars about how we owe the popularity of the Caesar to Walter Chell from Calgary. He was inspired by his friend’s suggestion to “create something unique”.

That’s why the Caesar will always stand out!

Australia - Coffee-Based Martinis (Like an Espresso Martini)

Want to make like an Aussie and provide a caffeine buzz in style? You can do that by suggesting one of Australia’s most popular cocktail trends, coffee-based martinis!

From classic espresso martinis to salted caramel versions if you’re feeling fancy, there’s a flavor combination for everyone.

You should know that the Australian bar culture is super friendly. So if you’re going to be serving it up Aussie style, you’re best to do it with a smile.

The Impact of Australian Bar Culture

Emma had just moved to Australia, and she was excited to explore the new country. After a few days of sightseeing, she decided it was time for her first night out in Australia. She went to a bar near her hotel, ready for an adventure.

But what Emma found when she arrived at the bar left her speechless: everyone there was so friendly! Every person who walked by greeted her with a smile or nod of their head; even staff members welcomed her warmly as soon as she stepped inside the door.

At first, Emma couldn’t believe how nice everyone was being – after all, this wasn’t something that happened often back home! But then again, maybe this is how people were in Australia? She felt grateful that such kindness existed here and began talking with some of the other patrons at the bar.

As they talked about life in Australia and shared stories from their own travels around the world, Emma started feeling more connected than ever before – not only with these strangers but also with herself. It seemed like no matter where you go on Earth, people are always ready to extend warmth towards one another if given half a chance.

By the end of the night, Emma felt thankful for having gone out and meeting new people – something which had been hard for her since moving overseas but now seemed much easier thanks to all those kind Australians at the bar!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can make your guests feel special. If you’re a bar owner or bartender, one great way to do that is by creating cocktails themed for the holiday of love.

Not sure where to start other than your regular old glass of red? Look no further; along with the team at Local Bartending School, I’ve got some delicious and romantic recipes here that are guaranteed to be a hit at any bar you’re serving at or running. Consider us the cupid for pairing up a cocktail with your guests.

Read on to learn more about making mixology magic happen–behind the bar, that is.

But before we get going, let’s learn a quick story from my bartender friend John. Luckily, you have me and the team at LBS so you won’t have to work as hard as he did. Poor dude.

John was a bartender at the hottest new bar in town and he thought he was ready for anything that came his way. But when Valentine’s Day rolled around, John quickly realized how wrong he had been! His customers were coming in expecting romantic cocktails to share with their loved ones, but unfortunately, John had no idea what any of them were.

John felt like an idiot as couples kept asking him to make something special and all he could do was shrug his shoulders.

To make matters worse, one couple had spent a ton of money on dinner and drinks only to leave without even enjoying the drinks they ordered because there wasn’t anything special about them.

The couple left a scathing review on Yelp claiming that it ruined their romantic evening out, which caused business at the bar to drop off significantly over the next few days.

This made John determined never to let this happen again; so after work each night he hit up every library and bookstore within a twenty-mile radius looking for books on cocktail recipes or bartending tips and tricks.

After weeks of hard work (and some trial-and-error) finally learned enough about mixology that by next Valentine’s Day, he could whip up all kinds of romantic cocktails for couples looking for something special! And business certainly picked up, plus John earned more than ever before in tips from happy couples who appreciated his newfound skills!

You can make it extra special for the guests who are nice to you by adding a few drops of sugar syrup for a little bit of sweetness and topping it off with some sweet maraschino cherries or a fresh edible flower as a garnish. Bonus points for a red sugar rim, though!

There’s no better way to say ‘I kinda like you, random stranger’ than with this special homemade cocktail! This romantic drink is bound to impress your lovey-dovey-eyed guests, just like a beautiful bouquet of roses would. It’s too bad their partner forgot the whole flower part. That’s when you come in with a drink, right!?

White cranberry juice adds a delicate fruity flavor, while the vodka and grenadine add depth and complexity that really bring the drink alive. To finish it off, the lemon-lime soda gives it an extra zing that will tantalize the taste buds.

The post The Healthiest Cocktails to Order – (Zero or Low Alcohol) first appeared on LBS Bartending School.

]]>

No, we’re not talking about those wussy mocktails you’re used to. We’re talking about real drinks with real flavor that just happen to have a lower alcohol content. Whether your guests are looking for non-alcoholic drinks for whatever reason or just a lower ABV option to sip on, there’s something on this list for everyone. So let’s get wasted—er, I mean, let’s get started, bartenders!

You have questions. I have answers.

• What is a low-ABV cocktail?
• Low-alcohol drinks contain between 3 and 10 percent ABV (alcohol-by-volume) or about 6 to 20 proof. For context, that’s about the same alcohol content as a glass of wine or half the strength of cocktails like martinis or margaritas. Some low-proof beverages are even lighter, with an alcohol content similar to beer. They typically feature mixer ingredients like juice or soda in larger volumes than liqueurs, wine, or beer.
• What can replace alcohol in a mocktail?
• Seltzer water, sparkling water, club soda, fruit juice, or tea can all replace alcohol in a mocktail. For more, read on!
• What is the most popular mocktail?
• The most popular mocktail is the Shirley Temple. But, we’re here to make sure you aren’t serving those anymore.
• Why do people come to a bar looking for zero-proof drinks?
• There are waves of folks opting to not drink. And that doesn’t mean they won’t still come to your bar. In fact, they may be more likely to stop in if there are a few drinks they can choose from. I’ve heard a ton of bartenders grope about making mocktails, but don’t! Here are some reasons why folks don’t drink:
• They don’t want to. Simply put.
• They are sober or venturing toward sobriety. They may also just want to do dry January!
• Health reasons stemming from pregnancy to blood pressure.
• It makes them sick.
• They are allergic.

Story Time: I’ve made some of my best money serving folks non-alcoholic cocktails! One time, I was serving a couple and one of them sat down first. She told me she wasn’t drinking because she was expecting but she hadn’t told her spouse yet. How cute, right! So I made her a little mocktail and kept her secret until she was ready. I’ve also served people who are sober but haven’t told their friends. Remember, we’re not serving judgment, we’re serving delicious cocktails!

Grasshopper

grasshopper-cocktail

The Grasshopper is a minty-fresh drink that’s served in a martini glass and isn’t meant to be consumed quickly. Making it a perfect, refreshing choice for a sessionable cocktail.

What does it mean when a drink is sessionable?

• When a beer, spirit, or cocktail is sessionable, it means it can be sipped on all day long. Why? There’s a lower alcohol percentage so your guests don’t get too drunk too fast. People like to session their drinks when they are: drinking for a long time (like at a wedding), have a low tolerance, or just like to pace themselves.

To get the full Grasshopper recipe, head to our list of refreshing cocktails.

bamboo-low-abv-cocktail

The Bamboo is one of those cocktails that you can enjoy for hours on end. It’s not hard to make and requires just two ingredients: dry vermouth and sherry, plus bitters! Campari Spritz

campari-spritz

Campari is an Italian aperitif made from a blend of herbs and spices. It’s often served with orange juice, but I like to mix it up with blood orange juice for a slightly sweeter flavor.

Ingredients

• 1 blood orange juice

• 2 fl. oz cucumber sparkling water

Instructions

• Add mint leaves into your glass and muddle away. Add sugar while you’re doing this! Once it’s good and muddled, add ice, sparkling water, and run. Stir, stir, stir. Add cucumber slices and mint for garnish.

Optional, Yet Bougie: Create flower-infused ice cubes for an added fancy touch.

Americano

americano-cocktail

This classic cocktail is perfect for anyone who wants to drink without alcohol. The Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water come together in a refreshing way that can be enjoyed all day long but if you’re looking for something with more kick then go right ahead change it up by switching out some gin for your preferred spirit!

Ingredients

• 1.5 oz Campari
• 1.5 oz sweet vermouth
• Soda water
• Orange twist, garnish

Instructions

• Grab your highball glass and fill it with ice. Add sweet vermouth and Campari. Before you stir everything up, top with soda water. Finally, garnish with an orange twist.

Liqueur Spritz

Liqueurs are great additions to cocktails. They add flavor and sweetness, and can be used to change the flavor of a cocktail or to make it more complex.

Liqueurs are spirits that are full of flavors like and made with fruits, herbs, or spices. They are typically around 20% ABV. Liqueurs can be used in a variety of cocktails, or simply enjoyed on their own. Some popular liqueurs include amaretto, triple sec, and Grand Marnier.

Basically, this is recipe I’m about to share is so easy, if you know how to stir a a bowl of soup, you can make a St. Germain Spritz.

st-germain-recipe-low-abv

Ingredients

• 2 oz St Germain
• 3 oz sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or champagne, chilled
• 1 oz soda water
• Lemon wedge, fresh thyme, lavender or rosemary are all options for garnishes

Instructions

• Chill the St. Germain by stirring it with ice. Add Prosecco and some soda water; plus any additional ice if you need it. Give a lemon wedge a good squeeze to add some juice and you’re ready to serve the Spritz.

Whether you’re a seasoned bartender or a total novice, there’s no denying that coming up with new and creative cocktail recipes is hard work. And while we all appreciate a classic mojito or old-fashioned every now and then, sometimes you just need to mix things up (literally). So, if you need some inspiration, look no further than this list of 10 of the most creative cocktails from some of the best mixologists around.

Shake Things Up with These Trendy, Creative Cocktail Recipes

1. Cotton Candy Martini
Two pink and red cotton candy martinis.

This one is sure to bring out the kid in everyone. Not the literal kid, because that’d be illegal (and kinda creepy).

The Cotton Candy Martini is made with vodka, raspberry liqueur, and blue curacao, and is garnished with – you guessed it – cotton candy.

Ingredients

• 1.5 oz vodka
• 1 oz raspberry liqueur
• 0.5 oz blue curacao
• Cotton candy, garnish

Instructions

• Add vodka, raspberry liqueur, and blue curacao to a shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with cotton candy.
2. Chocolate Cherry Bombs
Chocolate cherry bombs are served on a tray.

One important thing to note about these Chocolate Cherry Bombs is that they should be shaken well before serving. This will ensure that the flavors are properly mixed and that you get a delicious drink every time.

These bad boys are made with vodka, cherry syrup, chocolate liqueur, and cream, and are garnished with chocolate shavings and a cherry. They’re rich, decadent, and sure to be ordered over and over again by chocolate lovers.

Ingredients

• 1.5 ounce vodka
• 0.5 ounce cherry syrup
• 0.25 ounce chocolate liqueur
• 1 ounce cream
• Chocolate shavings
• Cherry, garnish

Instructions

• In a shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, cherry syrup, chocolate liqueur, and cream. Shake well and strain into a chilled glass. Top with chocolate shavings and a cherry for garnish.

LBS Instructor Tip: Use a creamy liquor and chocolate shavings to coat your rim. Or even graham cracker crust. Give folks a non-dairy option and you’ll be as popular as ‘Pokemon Go’ in 2016.

3. Galaxy Mule

Like a science experiment, but with alcohol… make magic happen right in front of your guests. Not that kind of magic!

Ingredients

• Magic Blue Ice
• 8 flowers of Butterfly Pea Flower Tea
• 2 cups hot water
• Galaxy Magic Moscow Mule
• 2 ounces vodka
• .50 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
• 4-6 ounces ginger beer
• crushed ice
• Crushed “Magic Blue Ice”

Instructions

• For the Galaxy Magic Mule:
• Crush clear ice and add it to a mug.
• Top with crushed Magic Blue Ice.
• Add lime juice, vodka, and ginger beer.
• Top with additional Magic Blue Ice.
• For the Magic Blue Ice:
• Add hot water to the Butterfly Pea Flowers, allow to steep for 3-4 minutes, and strain out the flowers. Pour the liquid into ice cube trays and freeze.

Don’t have butterfly pea flower at your bar? Don’t worry, Amazon has your back. Grab it online or, even better, source it from a local supply shop!

4. Smoked Manhattan
A Manhattan is served in a chilled martini glass with bar tools in the foreground.

“Knock knock.

Who’s there?

Smoked Manhattans!

Smoked Manhattans who?

I don’t know, but I want one!”

This twist on a classic cocktail features whiskey, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, and orange zest, all smoked with hickory chips before being served up in a martini glass. It’s perfect for anyone who loves a good Manhattan but is looking for something a little different.

Ingredients

• 2 ounces whiskey
• 1 ounce sweet vermouth
• 1 dash Angostura bitters
• 1 orange zest
• Hickory chips

Instructions

1. In a glass smoker, soak hickory chips in water for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
3. Add the chips to the smoker and grill for about 10 minutes, or until they begin to smoke.
4. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
5. In a shaker filled with ice, combine whiskey, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, and orange zest.
6. Shake well and strain into a martini glass.
7. Top with smoked hickory chips and serve immediately.
5. Margarita Jell-O Shots
A green shot glass with watermelon Jello.

These bad boys are not for the faint of heart. Margarita Jell-O Shots are made with tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and – of course – Jell-O mix. They’re fun, festive summer cocktails alternatives, and sure to get the barbeque started if you’re at a private event.

Just be careful not to serve too many to your drinker! They go down quick and easy.

Ingredients

• 1 (3-ounce) package lime Jell-O
• 0.5 cup tequila
• 0.25 cup triple sec
• 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

1. Pour the boiling water into a large bowl. Add the Jell-O mix and stir until it dissolves.
2. Add the tequila and triple sec and stir until well mixed.
3. Pour the mixture into shot glasses or small containers and refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours.
6. Rainbow Shots

Okay, so it’s not a super easy cocktail but this one is sure to turn heads when you make it. Perfect for happy hour or for celebrating the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!

The Rainbow Shot is made with vodka, triple sec, grenadine syrup, Blue Curacao liqueur, and lemon-lime soda. It’s an eye-catching drink that tastes as good as it looks.

7. Grapefruit Cardamom Gin Fizz
Orange drinks with grapefruit and rosemary.
Recipe from The Modern Proper

A gin fizz but make it extra. Because brunch deserves a little something more than juice orange juice or rosé.

This spritz-y, bubbly, champagne cocktail is made with gin, grapefruit juice, rosemary sprigs, simple syrup, club soda, and an egg white (which gives it that beautiful foamy head). Garnish it with a sprig of rosemary and enjoy!

Ingredients

• 2 ounces rosemary syrup
• 3 cardamom-infused gin
• 0.5 cup grapefruit juice
• Prosecco, splash
• Rosemary sprig, garnish
• Grapefruit peel, garnish

Instructions

• Add gin, rosemary syrup, and juice from the grapefruit into a mixer. Shake until it’s all mixed well. Strain and serve over fresh rocks. Top with some prosecco and your garnishes to serve.
8. White Russian - The Dude Abides
The Dude from The Big Lebowski drinks a White Russian.

If you’re a fan of The Big Lebowski then you’ll love this delicious cocktail inspired by the movie’s iconic character. It’s made with vodka, coffee liqueur (or Kahlua), and milk (or cream), and is garnished with coffee beans. Enjoy it while watching your favorite Coen brother’s film!

9. Raspberry Lemon Drop Martini
A Manhattan is served in a chilled martini glass with bar tools in the foreground.
Recipe by Tipsy Bartender

The most creative cocktails are ones that are inspired by flavors of nostalgia. Raspberry lemonade could very well be that note for your bar guests.

We’d recommend this to someone who does not quite want a tart lemony drink, but something sweet. Odds are, you already have what you need behind the bar. And if you’re at home–you can find the ingredients with no issue.

It’s made with vodka (or lemon-flavored vodka), raspberry liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup. Garnish it with a sugared rim and some fresh raspberries.

Ingredients

• 2 ounces raspberry vodka
• 2 ounces Triple Sec
• 2 ounces lemon juice
• 6-8 fresh raspberries
• Simple syrup, to taste
• Sugar, for rim

Instructions

• Rim your glass using simple syrup and sugar. Muddle raspberry and some more simple syrup in a glass. Add some ice, vodka, lemon juice, triple sec then shake it up until it’s cold. Strain, serve in your rimmed glass, and garnish.
10. Cucumber Mint Gimlet
A cucumber mint gimlet is served with mint and cucumber slices.
Recipe from Martha Stewart

Usually, when my regulars think cucumber mint, 90s lotion, or a spa day comes to mind.

Not with this Gimlet variation!

Cucumber and mint dance together alongside the botanical notes we all know and love in gin.

It’s made with gin, cucumber slices, lime juice, simple syrup, and mint leaves. Garnish it with a cucumber slice or sprig of mint. Cheers!

Ingredients

• 2 ounces cucumber gin
• 1 ounce lime juice
• 0.5 ounce mint simple syrup

Instructions

• Build the drink into a tall glass and serve with no ice.
11. Watermelon Mojito
A bird's eye view of a Watermelon Mojito, a creative cocktail.
Recipe from Liquor.com

This delicious twist on a classic mojito is perfect for summertime (or spring!) sipping. It’s made with watermelon, rum, fresh lime juice, fresh mint leaves, simple syrup, and sparkling water. Garnish it with a slice of watermelon or sprig of mint and enjoy!

Ingredients

From Casablanca to Madmen, Hollywood to Netflix, several decades have since passed where movies and television have influenced what types of cocktails folks are drinking.

However, you can’t watch decades of movies to memorize the recipe. Luckily for you, you don’t have to! Our instructors have compiled a list of the cocktails that are famous from movies and tv so you can have your guests feeling like they’re walking down the red carpet.

Famous Cocktails from Movies and Television

1. Cocktail

The Red Eye

You know I had to start the list off with the cocktail called Cocktail, right? Especially where the movie is all about a baby bartender who uses his new flair skill to pay for college.

Yup, it was Tom Cruise who got us to know and love the Red Eye, which many of my peer bartenders have prescribed as a sort of hangover elixir. Is it tomato juice, beer, or raw egg behind the secret cure-all drink? The world may never know… except for Tom Cruise.

Ingredients

• 1 bottle of lager (High Life, if you’re going for the true recipe)
• 3 ounces tomato juice (aka Bloody Mary Mix)
• 1000 milligrams aspirin
• 1 whole egg
• Dash of hot sauce
• Pint of salt and pepper

Instructions

• Build the drink into a tall glass and serve with no ice.
vodka-martini-recipe
1. Grace and Frankie

The Vodka Martini

Sure, the vodka martini was around before Netflix debuted Grace and Frankie. But no one has ever quite consumed one like Grace Hanson.

Ingredients

• 1.5 ounce vodka
• .166 (or ⅙) ounce dry vermouth
• Lemon twist
• Green olive

Instructions

• Fill your mixing glass full of ice, then add your ingredients. Stir, strain, and serve in a martini glass. Use a lemon twist and green olive for garnish.
1. Casino Royale

Vesper

I’d like to imagine that classical characters always drink a classic cocktail. Sometimes I’m right, and sometimes I’m wrong. This time, though, I’m right.

It’s Bond, James Bond, who likes the next classic movie cocktail recipe—a vodka “Vesper” martini.

Ingredients

• 3 ounces gin (Gordon’s only, per Mr. Bond himself.)
• 1 ounce vodka
• 1/2 ounce Lillet blanc aperitif
• Lemon twist, garnish

Instructions

• Add ingredients into a mixer glass and stir. Strain into a serving glass. But before, express oil from the lemon twist and rub on the rim eventually dropping it into the glass.

Pro Tip: Substitute the Lillet Blanc for Kina L’Avion d’Or! We’ve found it to be close to the original Kina Lillet.

1. The Big Lebowski

White Russian

The “Dude” Lebowski is a character in the movie and we got to see him be played by Jeff Bridges

It was the Dude himself who fancied himself a White Russian. That’s a combination of vodka, coffee liqueur, and light cream, the White Russian.

Usually, we recommend that you do, shake those ingredients and serve over fresh rock. Feeling super fancy? Add some cream. “But the Dude would just stir it with his finger.”

1. Casablanca

French 75

Nothing makes your guest feel fancier than a French 75 in their hand. It’s a bubbly champagne drink that screams a fancy dinner party. Jokes on the drinker, though. This cult-classic cocktail derived its name from a World War II gun, you guessed it, a French 75-millimeter.

Ingredients

• .5 ounce lemon juice
• 1 ounce gin
• .5 ounce Cointreau orange liqueur
• Champagne

Instructions

• In a flute, combine all ingredients, except for champagne. Top with champagne, garnish with a lemon twist and serve.
1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Singapore Sling with Mezcal on the Side

Mezcal is a type of tequila, as some of you may know. But what you might not know is that this drink, Singapore Sling with Mezcal on the Side, will quickly knock your guests being a blend of Benedictine, cherry brandy, and gin. You guessed it–all of that serviced with a Mezcal chaser.

Here’s a fun quote from the movie you can pull out when serving, too:

“Twenty-four hours ago we were sitting in the Pogo Lounge of the Beverly Heights Hotel — in the patio section of course —drinking Singapore Slings with mezcal on the side, hiding from the brutish realities of this foul year of Our Lord…”

1. Groundhog Day

Sweet Vermouth on the Rocks with a Twist

Bill Murray, let’s admit it, needed something to get him through repeating the same day over and over again. For his character, Phil Connors, it was Sweet Vermouth on the Rocks with a Lemon Twist.

drinks-from-movies
1. Mad Men

Old Fashioned

Welp, turns out I’m much more like a corporate man than I’d once thought. I, too, like my Old Fashioned the way Don Draper does—a maraschino cherry, sugar, angostura bitters, club soda, and an orange peel.

Ingredients

• 2 ounces Woodford Reserve Bourbon
• 3–5 dashes of Angostura bitters
• 2–3 dashes of Regan’s No. 6 orange bitters
• 1 bar spoon rich demerara syrup
• Hand-cut ice
• Lemon peel
• Orange peel

Instructions

• Build drink in a mixing glass and stir to dilute
• Pour over fresh ice into a service piece.
• Twist lemon and orange peel over the drink and drop them in before serving.
1. Meet the Parents

Tom Collins

Robert De Niro brings a traditional overprotective dad figure near and dear to our hearts, with the help of that cute baby signing for “more”. That’s not the only thing that’s traditional about Jack (De Niro’s character)–he also enjoys a classy Tom Collins. For our Tom Collins recipe served in a highball glass, click here!

1. The Blues Brothers

Orange Whip

The Blues Brothers are memorable for many reasons. Why? Because of the mental image of this you just played in your head.

They’re like big kids. And we all know kids like their sweets. Except this time, it has alcohol. Here’s the recipe behind the Orange Whip.

Ingredients

• 4 oz orange juice freshly squeezed
• 1 oz rum
• 1 oz vodka
• .5 oz triple sec
• 2 oz heavy cream
• Crushed ice

Instructions

• Add everything into your shaker and mix until it’s cold–20 to 30 seconds.
• Strain and serve over fresh crushed ice.
1. Bonfire of the Vanities

Sidecar

In the movie Bonfire of the Vanities, a character, who isn’t supposed to drink due to his health, orders a Sidecar despite. In other words, this drink is so good that some folks are willing to risk their life. Dedication? We’ll let you decide…

1. Sex and the City

Cosmos

Here’s a huge hint: Sex and the City, is one of those TV shows set in New York City. If you’ve lived under a rock for the last few decades, just picture a group of strong independent women (who don’t need any men) drinking Cosmopolitans and figuring life out.

famous-martinis
1. Some Like it Hot

Manhattan

In Some Like It Hot, Marilyn Monroe’s character enjoyed nothing more than a Manhattan.

1. Sideways

Pinot Noir

For your wine-o regulars, this list could very well make them feel alone in their drink of choice. But they don’t need to worry and neither do you. Sideways makes our oenophiles feel right at home. This movie has reportedly made Pinot Noir the wine we know and love today.

For example, the main character replied when asked, “So why are you so into Pinots? They’re like a thing with you.”

“It’s a hard grape to grow, as you know. It’s thin-skinned, temperamental. It’s not a survivor like Cabernet that can grow anywhere and thrive even when neglected. Pinot needs constant care and attention, you know? And in fact, it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked-away corners of the world. And, only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time… to understand Pinot’s potential… can then coax it into its fullest expression.”

• Miles Raymond, an excerpt from Sideways.

That’s only something a true wine aficionado would say. So write it down and practice!

1. Sideways

Chianti

See! I promised you something for wine folks! Another wine that was helped catapulted into stardom by well… the stars!

In fact, NPR has written an entire article on how Sideways has shaped the wine industry today. Miles’ (a character in the movie) opinion had negative and positive impacts, like dramatically increasing the demand for pinot noir and decreasing any interest in Merlot until recent years.

1. Lost in Translation

Suntory Whiskey

Bill Murray is back on our list, but with no groundhog in tow this time. Instead, he’s trying to make Suntory whiskey famous by filming ads in Japan. I think it worked! We see this brand of whiskey served all over the U.S.!

1. American Psycho

J&B Straight and a Corona

J&B might be on the bottom of your speed rail, but it’s on the top of the list for Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Perfect for the spooky season!

1. The Queen’s Gambit

Gibson Martini

the-queens-gambit-drink

This Netflix hit was viewed and loved by over 60 million households worldwide. I’m thinking this may result in your guest ordering a Gibson Martini at your bar sometime soon. Make sure you’re ready. Write this recipe down!

Ingredients

• 2.5 ounces gin
• .5 ounce dry vermouth
• Cocktail onion, garnish

Instructions

• Add your liquor to a glass for mixing and stir until the outside of the mixer feels cold. Stain into martini glass and garnish with a cocktail onion.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have cocktail onions, you don’t have what it takes to make a Gibson. Mentally, I’m sure you’ve got it! Physically, without an onion, it’s a martini.

Here’s a video for those of you who are more visual learners:

Ingredients

• 1.25 ounce reposado tequila

For my bar owners, they’ll remember you for teaching them everything they need to know about the bar industry. In return, you’ll see a productive staff, more accurate pours, and maybe even a gift of gratitude when your bartenders make it to the big screen. You never know…

Bartending’s Been Great, But You’re Ready for Your Fifteen Minutes of Fame…

I get it. I also felt pretty burnt out a few times during my bartending career. But honestly, I wasn’t ready to be totally removed from it. I just need a new role. If that sounds like you, you might want to check out instructor jobs with Local Bartending School.

Come on in, witches! Halloween is fully on this year… so sharpen your claws, grow out your mole hairs, and let’s get ready to make some drinks for our guests, shall we?

All sorts of folks come out for Halloween. And since they’re too old to go trick or treating (not my words!), they’ll be crawling to the bar in costumes seeking themed drinks. If you think about it, their Halloween success is in your hands. Don’t be the one to make their holiday suck! Let their significant other do that for them…

In my experience, knowing a few, good themed drinks for fall, winter, or even spring holidays will make you stand out as one of the great bartenders, not just one of the “good” ones.

Here’s a list of the top Halloween cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else. Brought to you by the team of bartending ghouls and ghosts who just so happen to also be the professionals and instructors at Local Bartending School.

Before we get started, I’m going to let you in a little secret. (Don’t worry, for those of you who aren’t into the spooky stuff–it’s not scary. Not as scary as our jobs already are. Actually, it’s pretty fun!)

Halloween cocktails sell significantly better when it’s a whole experience. Sure themed drinks are cool, but if you can/if it’s on-brand:

• Smack a few decorations around the place like spider webs, bat silhouettes, lights, or pumpkins.
• Use garnishes that look weird! Like eyeballs, black rims, or fake edible blood (hello grenadine!).
• Wear apparel, jewelry, or other adornments that are festive A.F. (My tips were always a solid 20%, if not more when I was the most festive human behind the bar.)
• Don’t be afraid to play with dry ice for a smokey, magical effect.

Bloody Mary

bloody-mary-halloween-ideas

The Bloody Mary is a drink that needs no alteration to its name to be spooky It sounds creepy, it looks creepy, but is a crowd favorite and easy to make.

Another tip: Make this a mocktail easily by substituting the alcohol for another liter of ginger ale. Don’t forget to make it fruity with fresh fruit!

Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned

Some Halloween cocktail recipes don’t need to be complex, black, or magically foggy.

For your guests who are a bit scared to venture out, try suggesting an infusion of flavor to your Old Fashioneds! They take well to a whole corn maze full of flavors like:

• Pumpkin
• Apple Cider
• Candy Corn Puree

Dia de los Muertos Mule

pumpkin-kentucky-moscow-mule

Mules are one of my favorite things ever. But if you add pumpkin AND bourbon? Twist my mummified arm.

Tip: Try a demerara simple syrup in a mule or an old-fashioned for an extra sweet treat.

BONUS RECIPE! Hot Toddy

hot-toddy-halloween

The Hot Toddy is a classic, warm drink recipe that’s made a few lists around here at LBS–whiskey recipes you need to know and winter cocktails just to name a few. And now, Halloween cocktails. Apparently, a little lemon juice goes a long way.

Bartenders in the north, a warm drink like a Hot Toddy or Irish Coffee can warm the soul back to life on a cold Halloween night.

• 4 ounce ginger beer
• Ancho chile powder, pinch

BONUS RECIPE! Dark and Stormy in the Pumpkin Patch

As soon as the leaves start falling (well, actually, before then…) the pumpkin craving starts calling. Scratch the itch that all of your bar patrons are having and give them the pumpkin!

Serving Up Boos for Halloween and Every Month After

Bring your own boos! Don’t forget to share this with your other bartenders so they can work their magic behind the bar this Halloween, too.

Good luck out there, friends. Stay safe, serve safe, and remember–this is only the start of the peak season for some of you.

If you aren’t automatically singing “Shots” by LMFAO, who are you?

Whether you know the song or not, as a bartender you will be pouring shots, aka shooters. If you’re not familiar, missed out on the party scene, or haven’t been around alcohol much before, shots are typically 1-ounce portions of liquor, or blends of liquor and juices, that are meant to be consumed at a fast pace.

They’re handy in the realm of drinking as they’re usually quite tasty, quick to drink, and also quick to get your guest intoxicated. Why? There’s just as much alcohol by volume (or ABV) in one shot of liquor compared to 6 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer.

Because they’re easy for drinkers and straight to the punch, they’re ordered all the time–especially if you work in a college town. You’ll need to know the best shot recipes in order to be a good bartender

If you don’t, you can say goodbye to all that glorious money you could be making. But don’t worry, as always the crew at Local Bartending School (LBS) and their leading course instructors are always here to help.

Here are the top shots every bartender needs to know:

1. Irish Car Bomb
Image via Giphy

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations aren’t the only time to enjoy the Irish Car Bomb. You can (and should) serve this fun beer-and-shot combination all year long.

Irish Car Bombs belong to the group of drinks called Boilermakers. No, not anything to do with Purdue’s mascot, a Boilermaker in bartending-land is a type of drink in which you put a shot of liquor into a beer. In this case, the shot contains a suspect-looking combination of whiskey and Irish cream.

Ingredients

• .5 ounce Irish whiskey
• .5 ounce Baileys Irish cream
• Guinness beer

Instructions

• Add the Baileys and whiskey into a shot glass, pouring slowly to create a layered effect.
• Serve a pint glass of Gunness, filled about 75% to the top, and the shot to your guest. Instruct them to drop the shot into the beer.
2. Jäger Bomb
jager-bomb-easy-recipe
Image via Canva

Once you’ve been behind the bar for a little while, you’ll learn that Jägermeister is a pretty polarizing drink of choice. Your patrons either hate it or love it, with not much in between.

A Jager bomb combines liquor with Red Bull. It’s quick to the punch for your guests and quick to make on your end.

Ingredients

• 1.5 ounces Jägermeister Liqueur
• .5 can Red Bull

Instructions

• Fill a shot glass with Jägermeister. Pour half a can of Red Bull into a pint glass.
• Serve to your guest and let them drop the shot into the bigger glass. Then, they chug!
3. Blow Job
blow-job-shot-recipe
Image via Bree Recipes | Recipe via Liquor.com

This one starts off as one of the many layered shots we know and love.

Be careful searching this one up on the internet. Luckily, we have the recipe right here so you don’t need to go down that hole.

Like most shots, a Blow Job is easy to make and easy to drink. Naturally, your guest can hold it in their hands and take the shot.

But the right way to drink a Blow Job is to consume it hands-free.

Your guest will pick up the entire shot glass with their mouth, tilting their head back and downing it all if they really want to experience a good Blow Job.

Ingredients

• .5 ounce amaretto liqueur
• .5 ounce Irish cream liqueur
• Whipped cream, garnish

Instructions

• Add the amaretto to the shot glass.
• Slowly pour the Irish cream over the amaretto to layer it.
• Finish with whipped cream and serve for suckin’.
4. Buttery Nipple
buttery-nipple-shot
Recipe & Image via The Live-In Kitchen

What is a Buttery Nipple shot made of? And why is it called Buttery Nipple? You have questions. We have answers.

This popular shot is a product of a time in history when folks loved to name cocktails exotically. Someone combined Irish cream and a bit of butterscotch schnapps to create an awesomely areola-esque concoction.

Ingredients

• 1 ounce butterscotch schnapps
• .5 ounce Irish cream

Instructions

• Put butterscotch schnapps in a shot glass.
• Float the cream on top of the schnapps with a bar spoon.
• Add a tiny dot of grenadine for a true nipple effect.
5. Alabama Slammer
alabama-slammer-shot
Image via Eat Yourself Skinny | Recipe via The Spruce Eats

Although the Alabama Slammer was one of the most popular drink recipes and classic cocktails in the 1970s, 1980s, and even 1990s, it has lost some of its luster in recent bartending times.

But, even such, it’s still popular in parts of its home state and is a favorite choice of mixed drinks at college bars across the country thanks to its fruity taste and peppy effects. So if you’re bartending in Alabama, this one 100% needs to be on your drink resume.

At Crimson Tide tailgates, where it is often served as a shot, the Slammer is said to have originated at the University of Alabama. You can absolutely demonstrate your point by slamming one back. Yummy notes of nutty, herbal notes, baking spices and citrus come through clearly.

The Alabama Slammer slams not only in its tailgating shot form, but is also great served as a cocktail over fresh rocks in a highball.

Ingredients

• .5 ounce sloe gin
• .5 ounce amaretto liqueur
• .5 ounce Southern Comfort
• .25 ounce orange juice

Instructions

• In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the sloe gin, amaretto, Southern Comfort, and orange juice. Shake, strain, and serve in a shot glass.
6. Flatliner
what-is-a-flatliner
Image via Drink Manila | Recipe via Difford's Guide

A flatliner may sound like a shot that will put your guests to sleep, but it’s actually known to jumpstart things.

“If we send out a round of flatliner shots to a table, you can expect the party to grow like a wildflower,” says bartender Steve Foster. “People go back and forth sending them to each other. It’s definitely a social drink.”

Ingredients

• .5 ounce sambuca
• .5 ounce tequila
• 4-6 drops of Tabasco

Instructions

• Add the Sambuca to the shot glass. Then add tequila slowly over sambuca. Drip your hot sauce in tequila, it should fall through but not sink into the sambuca. You’ll get an orange middle that looks like… you guessed it. Flatline!
7. Kamikaze
kamikaze-shot-recipe
Image via Kiss My Keto | Recipe via Liquor.com

This recipe calls for vodka mixed with orange liqueur and fresh lime juice. The fresh lime juice is in contrast to many recipes calling for sour mix or Rose’s lime cordial, neither of which delivers the same tangy, citrus bite that gives the Kamikaze its backbone.

Fans of the Lemon Drop or even the Cosmopolitan, which was created as a cranberry-spiked riff on the Kamikaze, should enjoy this one. Try variations like raspberry for a seasonal swing on things.

Ingredients

• 1 ounce vodka
• .5 ounce orange liqueur
• .5 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed

Instructions

• Add the vodka, orange liqueur, and lime juice to a shaker with ice, and shake thoroughly until well-chilled.
• Strain into two shot glasses.
8. Seven-Headed Dragon

This isn’t just a whiskey shot, this is an everything shot.

A shot that sounds as powerful as it actually is, the Seven-Headed Dragon. Much like the Flatliner, this shot will either get the party started or be the perfect suggestion for a last-call nightcap.

Ingredients

• 1 part Jim Beam
• 1 part Jack Daniel’s
• 1 part Wild Turkey
• 1 part Jagermeister
• 1 part Goldschlager
• 1 part Rumple Minze
• 1 part 151

Instructions

• Add all equal parts into a shaker tin with ice. Shake and strain into two shot glasses. Get ready for action.
9. ABC
how-to-make-abc-shot
Image via Liquor.com | Recipe via Kiwi Limon

Easy as 123, ABC! This shot is strong, sweet, and includes three ingredients. You guessed it, they start with A, B, and C.

Ingredients

• .33 ounce amaretto
• .33 ounce Bailey’s
• .33 ounce cognac

Instructions

• Gently layer all three ingredients into a shot glass.
10. Ginger Red-Headed Slut
ginger-red-headed-slut-recipe
Image via Shake That | Recipe via Key Ingredient

Forgive the harsh name, whoever named these shots really had a zesty side that’s for sure. To be more inclusive, try calling this shooter recipe the Ginger Red-Headed Shot instead. Or don’t! We can’t tell you what to do.

Ingredients

• 1 ounce peach schnapps
• 1 ounce Jagermeister
• 1 ounce cranberry juice

Instructions

• Add ice to a shaker and mix all the ingredients. Mix well and strain into large shot glasses.

Master the Art of Shots and Flair!

Some shots you can set on fire. Some shots you can literally make by stacking glasses like dominos. But only if you know the art of flair.

The Fourth of July, aka America’s birthday, isn’t all just firecrackers, parades, and those oddly satisfying glow-worm, snake things.

Nope, I have questions! And no, I’m not wondering who actually discovered Plymouth Rock nor am I stuck on how those damn snakes work (I’m totally stumped).

The biggest thing I want to know about summer’s favorite holiday? The most popular drink on the 4th of July! Why? Because, and quite Benjamin Frankly—I want to see my tip jar light up like fireworks.

With the help of Local Bartending School, I’ve compiled a list of perfectly patriotic recipes to do just that—fill your tip jar so it’s exploding like a sparkler.

This list of the best Fourth of July cocktails is fit for all of anyone behind the bar whether you’re bartending an event (‘tis the season for backyard cookouts aplenty) or any July party you’re in charge of.

Let’s light these July cocktails up, already!

Red, White, and Bartender Boozy July 4th Cocktail Recipes

1. Watermelon Margarita
watermelon-fourth-of-july-drink
Image via Eat Yourself Skinny | Recipe via Love and Lemons

I know what you’re thinking…

Margaritas aren’t innately patriotic. But watermelons and adult slushies sure are.

Ditch the jalapeño in this recipe, plop a few blueberries for garnish, and, boom! Your guests can now enjoy the colors of the flag in one refreshing sip.

Ingredients

• 1 ounce tequila
• 1 slice jalapeño, thinly sliced
• 2 ounces cut watermelon
• .25 ounce lime juice
• Lime wedges, garnish
• Sea salt rims, optional

Instructions

• Make a jalapeño-infused tequila. This step can be skipped if you are not using the jalapeño. Infuse with blueberries instead!
• Blend the watermelon with lime juice and ice in a blender until smooth.
• Prep your serving glass with a salt rim and ice. Pour in watermelon juice and tequila. Stir to combine and serve!
2. Uncle Sam’s Sangria
summer-sangria-recipe
Recipe & Image via Home is Where the Boat Is

Another drink not from the United States is sangria! But what makes this drink perfectly patriotic is its shareable qualities and star-spangled fruit bits.

Suggest a glass, maybe even a pitcher or two to your big groups. It’s quick to batch and serve if you’re running a high-volume bar operation.

Don’t forget your patriotic garnishes!

Ingredients (This recipe is designed for pitcher, or as a batched recipe.)

• 2-3 cups mixed berries
• 1 bottle Pinot Grigio, or white wine of choice
• .5 cup Pomegranate juice
• .5 cup citrus flavored vodka
• 16 oz bottle of lemon-lime soda

Instructions

• Strawberry slices and blueberries should be added to a large pitcher. Mix in vodka, juice, and wine. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours or until it’s time to serve.
• Before serving, add chilled lemon-lime soda to the pitcher and mix well. Then pour into glasses over fresh rocks and garnish with fruit.
3. Red, White, and Blue Jello Shots

What is the most patriotic drink?

Though we may never know the truth behind the discovery of the United States, we can hunt down exactly what the most patriotic is.

Reports show that Americans spend almost 2 BILLION dollars on beer, just beer, on the Fourth of July. That, my friends, takes the mystery out of everything. Beer is the most patriotic drink. Homer Simpson would be proud.
